Consulting – Principles of Effective counseling

Every consultant has a different perspective on effective counseling. In this article I want to share with you the guidelines you may find useful as you reflect your principles

1. Solutions to every problem is between you and your customers. Contrary to popular belief, advice is not a process where customers will talk about their problems and consultants will provide solutions or recommendations immediately. The parties concerned have to think it through, to weigh their options and take the best that will benefit the company or the company as a whole.

2. Advisors should accept and even encourage diverse values and perspectives within the company. Every employee is unique and they see issues in the organization in a very different way. As a consultant, you must know how to accept this fact and use it to your advantage. Keep in mind that different considerations may significantly help to solve problems.

3. Get all the angles of the problem. Start where your customers are present. Ask about their pressing issues / struggles and causes them, what they have tried so far, what worked and what did not, and their ideas about what could be done now. While this may take some of your time, this can keep you on track when designing your action.

4. Consulting is not to blame. It is very rare that a client or consultant is out to hurt someone in the organization. Although some people might be reasons why the problem occurred, to teach them will definitely not help solve the problem. As a consultant, the focus should be to help your customers find solutions to their problems.
